Macy's stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day even though the company hosts the country's most famous Thanksgiving Day Parade, and stores also close on Christmas Day.
The Parade Runs, But the Stores Stay Closed
Macy's puts on its famous Thanksgiving Day Parade through New York City every year — the 2025 edition marked its 99th year with 34 balloons, 28 floats, and 11 marching bands — but the retail stores themselves stay closed on Thanksgiving so employees can spend the day with their own families. Macy's has said it closes on Thanksgiving specifically for that reason, then reopens with extended hours for Black Friday.
